Many couples experience infertility, which affects men and women almost equally. Although there is currently a wide range of treatments and techniques available to improve fertility and the chances of conception, there are still many improvements that can be made. Organon is committed to reproductive health and has been an active player in the field of fertility for around 75 years.
It has been proven that one in six healthy couples of reproductive age will experience fertility problems. Most couples having problems are diagnosed as ‘subfertile’; many of them can be helped by Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART). Between 1% and 4% of all babies born in developed countries are conceived by ART methods.
Most fertility treatments rely on drugs. Both IVF and ICSI treatments involve fertility drugs which act by stimulating the ovaries to produce several eggs for fertilization. The process is known as controlled ovarian stimulation. Other drugs are also used to create follicle maturation and prevent LH surges.
Organon is a global leader in the field of fertility developing a line of products focusing on patient-centered treatment and has built long-term partnerships with experts to advance its fertility activities. Our largest product, Puregon®–a recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone that has been on the market for over 10 years–is among the most widely used fertility treatments in the world. In addition, we have launched a number of other fertility products throughout our history, such as Pregnyl® (1932), Puregon Pen® (2000) and Orgalutran® (2001). Today, we have several new pipeline compounds under development specifically aimed at providing more patient-centered treatment options involving self-administration and shorter, simplified methods. |
